“A riverside area backed by lush mountains and home to Japan’s most iconic bamboo grove—like walking through a masterpiece painting.”
Arashiyama is a charming suburban area in western Kyoto known for its picturesque landscape and tranquil atmosphere. Nestled along the Oi River and surrounded by forested mountains, the area feels like stepping into a painting crafted by a master artist. The setting combines rivers, hills, and foliage that change color with the seasons, drawing visitors year-round.
One of Arashiyama’s most iconic attractions is the Sagano Bamboo Grove, a 500-meter walking path flanked by towering bamboo trees over 15 meters high. As the wind flows through, it creates a peaceful rustling sound and mesmerizing play of light and shadow, making it one of Japan’s most photogenic and serene spots.
Other notable attractions include the Togetsukyo Bridge, an iconic wooden bridge offering great views, the Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a beautiful Zen garden, and the Iwatayama Monkey Park, where visitors can hike uphill to see wild monkeys and panoramic views of Kyoto.
