“A historic World War II cave that once hid national gold reserves, featuring a sacred hermit statue and a beautiful Naga staircase.”

Ruesi Sombat Cave, located in Bung Nam Tao Subdistrict, Lom Sak District, Phetchabun Province, is a relatively small cave situated on a low rocky hill amidst the mountainous and deciduous forest landscape of northern-central Thailand. The cave has a clear entrance and the surrounding area has been improved for easier access, making it a readily accessible historical and natural tourist destination.

The cave's significance lies in its connection to World War II, particularly the concept of establishing "Phetchabun Municipality" during the government of Field Marshal Plaek Phibulsongkram. This strategic planning aimed to relocate the center of administration away from Bangkok during a time of wartime threats. Although the project was never completed, several areas in Phetchabun Province, including this cave, are mentioned as potentially playing a role in strategic exploration and land preparation during that era.

The cave's interior has now been improved with walkways and some lighting to facilitate tourists' exploration of the natural rock cavities formed by geological processes. Tourists can enjoy the peaceful and cool atmosphere inside, observing the natural rock formations and structures created over time.

At the entrance of the cave is a statue of a hermit, which is the origin of the name "Tham Ruesi Sombat" (Hermit's Treasure Cave). It's a place of reverence and local belief, making it a valuable blend of natural, historical, and cultural significance. While not a major tourist attraction, it's a suitable destination for those interested in Thai history during World War II and seeking an atmosphere where historical narratives coexist with natural beauty.
