“ A waterfall over 300 meters high, visible from afar, home to the rare freshwater crab, Gomazum flowers, and natural hot springs—perfect for both nature and relaxation. ”

Namtok Ngao National Park spans over 417,500 rai (approximately 668 square kilometers) across the Phu Kiew–Khao Pho Ta Chong Lo mountain range on the western side of southern Thailand.

The terrain is largely composed of steep mountain ranges that function as both a natural “lung” and “sponge,” absorbing moisture and regulating water flow. The park is covered by dense tropical rainforest, heavily influenced by the southwest monsoon, resulting in abundant rainfall nearly year-round—locally described as “eight months of rain, four months of sun.”

This environment supports exceptionally rich biodiversity. Notable flora include Dendrobium formosum (Gomazum flower), a rare wild orchid that blooms only once a year, and the Krapho palm, a dominant native plant species in the area.

Pu Chao Fah Crab (Thaiphusa sirikit) – A One-of-a-Kind Species

A key zoological highlight is the discovery of the Pu Chao Fah crab, a small and visually striking freshwater waterfall crab (white body with blue claws edged in purple).

It was discovered in 1986 by Professor Phaibul Naiyanetr and later granted royal permission to bear the name of Queen Sirikit in its scientific designation.

This species is endemic to this location, living exclusively in rock crevices and soil burrows along streams near the waterfall, making it one of the rarest freshwater crab species in the world.

Namtok Ngao Waterfall – A Stream from the Sky

The iconic waterfall is a dramatic plunge waterfall, cascading from a steep cliff with a total height_ of over 300 meters. From afar, it appears as a white ribbon cutting through the lush green forest.

Its waters flow into Khlong Ngao and eventually drain into the Andaman Sea.

Historically, this area was once an important tin mining site in Ranong. Today, remnants of mining activity remain as part of the cultural and settlement history of the Ngao community.

Nature Trail

The park features a 2-kilometer nature trail that passes through dense rainforest, leading visitors to the upstream area and viewpoints where the Pu Chao Fah crab can sometimes be observed in its natural habitat.

Conquering Khao Nom Sao

For adventure enthusiasts, the park offers a 3-day, 2-night trekking route to Khao Nom Sao, named for its distinctive breast-like shape.

At the summit:

  • A unique dwarf forest ecosystem shaped by constant strong winds
  • Rare endemic plant species
  • A panoramic viewpoint where, on clear days, both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are visible

Phrang Hot Spring

Phrang Hot Spring is another notable area within the park.

  • Natural mineral water temperature: 35–45°C
  • Clear water with a mild mineral scent
  • Designated soaking pools for visitors
  • Set within a peaceful, shaded natural stream environment

It provides an ideal setting for relaxation and recovery after outdoor activities.

How to Get There
  • By Car: From Ranong town, take Highway No. 4 (Phetkasem Road) heading south toward Ratchakrut for about 13 km.
The waterfall will be visible on the left. Turn left and continue for about 700 meters to reach the park office.
