“Pay respects to the ancient stupa containing the remains of the first monarch of Hariphunchai and admire the beauty of the Suwan Chang Kot Pagoda a square, tiered structure adorned with standing Buddha images in the blessing posture, preserved as a world-class artistic treasure.”

Chamadevi Temple, locally known as Ku Kut Temple, is one of the most historically significant royal monasteries in Thailand, located in Mueang Lamphun District. It was built around 755 AD by King Anantayot and King Mahantayot, the twin sons of Queen Chamadevi, to enshrine the ashes of their mother the legendary first monarch of the Hariphunchai Kingdom. The importance of this temple to Lamphun Province lies in its role as a symbol of faith spanning over a millennium and as historical evidence showcasing the prosperity of Buddhism in Northern Thailand since ancient times.

The uniqueness of Chamadevi Temple resides in the "Suwan Chang Kot Pagoda" (or Ku Kut Pagoda), which features a square-shaped architecture reminiscent of Bodh Gaya, consisting of five receding tiers. Each tier has niches housing a total of 60 standing Buddha images in the blessing posture, representing the exquisite Hariphunchai art style. This pagoda is hailed as the prototype for square-shaped stupas throughout Northern Thailand in later eras. The name "Ku Kut" (meaning "short-top pagoda") was given because the spire of the pagoda broke off over time. Additionally, the temple grounds house the "Rattana Chedi," a beautiful octagonal pagoda adorned with intricate stucco work, a rare architectural style to find today.

A must-try experience when visiting is to perform a "Circumambulation" (walking clockwise) around the Ku Kut Pagoda to admire the delicate stucco patterns and Buddhist artistry. It is also essential to pay respects to the statue of Queen Chamadevi for good fortune. Culturally, this site serves as the spiritual heart of Lamphun residents, who continue to hold grand annual worship festivals. Walking amidst a religious site over a thousand years old allows visitors to feel the peace and mystical charm of a living ancient kingdom.

Currently, Chamadevi Temple is registered as a vital National Ancient Monument and is an unmissable destination for those visiting Lamphun. The greatness of this site is not in its physical size but in its antiquity and the spirit of Queen Chamadevi, who has protected the city of Lamphun for centuries. Visiting Chamadevi Temple offers a touch of the true roots of Northern Thai people and an appreciation for a priceless cultural world heritage.

We invite all tourists to come and seek blessings while absorbing the beauty of Hariphunchai art at Chamadevi Temple. Amidst the serene and shaded atmosphere, you will witness the steadfast faith of the ancestors, which will surely leave you impressed and in love with the simple yet magnificent grandeur of Lamphun.
