“A natural rock ledge extending out from the main cliff, accompanied by a single standing pine tree that creates a stunningly balanced natural composition. Pha Lomsak is one of the most popular spots to watch the sunset, offering breathtaking views and unforgettable moments. It is often called the “End of Love” point for Phu Kradueng conquerors.”
Pha Lomsak is part of the western cliffline of Phu Kradueng, a sandstone plateau within Phu Kradueng National Park. The cliff juts dramatically from the main escarpment like a natural balcony, located about 1,280 meters above sea level. From this point, visitors can see vast mountain ranges such as Phu Luang and Phu Khwang, glowing beautifully under the setting sun.
The trail to Pha Lomsak starts from Wang Kwang Visitor Center, the main area for accommodation and facilities on the plateau. Visitors must hike about 9 kilometers through pine forests, grasslands, and scenic viewpoints including Pha Yiap Mek, Pha Daeng, and Pha Mak Dook. Along the way, small shops run by locals offer drinks and snacks. Those who wish to shorten travel time can rent bicycles from the visitor center, though the path is sandy and uneven.
The highlight of the trip is the sunset at Pha Lomsak — a breathtaking natural show where the sun slowly dips behind distant mountains, bathing the sky in shades of gold and crimson. The iconic image of the lone pine tree beside the cliff ledge has become a timeless symbol of Phu Kradueng, representing endurance, beauty, and the spirit of adventure.
Temperatures at Pha Lomsak drop significantly during the cool season (November–January), especially in the late afternoon and early evening, so visitors are advised to bring warm clothing. After sunset, most hikers return to Wang Kwang, which takes about 2–3 hours on foot. Carrying a flashlight or headlamp is essential for walking safely in the dark.
How to Get There
From Wang Kwang Visitor Center (on the summit):
-
On Foot: The most common route, about 9 km each way, taking 3–4 hours per trip.
-
By Bicycle: Bicycles can be rented at Wang Kwang Visitor Center; suitable for those who want a faster option but should be careful on sandy trails.
From the base of the mountain (new route):
-
A new hiking trail from Ban Fong Tai in Nam Nao District allows direct access to Pha Lomsak, covering about 5.2 km. However, this path does not pass through the visitor center.
