“Thousands of Christmas trees turn bright red at year-end, with scenic photo spots, mountain views, and cool weather like Europe”

The Phu Ruea Christmas Tree Field is located in Phu Ruea District, one of the few areas in Thailand that experiences consistently cool weather during the winter season. Temperatures typically range between 10–20°C and can drop even lower in the early morning. These climatic conditions, combined with suitable altitude and sunlight, make the area ideal for cultivating high-quality Christmas trees (poinsettias).

The distinctive feature of these plants lies in their “bracts” — modified leaves that change color from green to bright red, rather than actual flowers. This transformation occurs due to photoperiodism, when longer nighttime hours during winter trigger the color change. As a result, entire fields turn red simultaneously from late November to December, marking the peak tourism period.

The area has been developed into a full-scale agro-tourism destination, divided into several zones:

  • Main cultivation zone: neatly arranged rows of poinsettias, perfect for panoramic photography
  • Decorative zone: features artistic elements such as flower arches, windmills, wooden fences, and European-style props
  • Walking paths: designed to allow visitors to explore without disturbing the crops
  • Activity and retail zone: offers local agricultural products, winter flowers, and community-made souvenirs

During the annual Phu Ruea Christmas Festival, the site is enhanced with better visitor management, including organized entry and exit routes, expanded parking areas, and local tourism activities to accommodate large crowds.

In the daytime, visitors can clearly enjoy the vibrant red landscape, especially during morning and late afternoon when the lighting enhances depth and softness. At night, illumination lighting is installed across the field, creating layered shadows and a romantic atmosphere distinct from the daytime experience.

Economically, the Christmas tree field plays an important role in the local community. It serves as both a production and direct sales hub, allowing farmers to sell poinsettias and other ornamental plants without middlemen. This generates steady local income and supports related businesses such as restaurants, homestays, and tour services.

The surrounding area is also connected to key attractions, including Phu Ruea National Park, viewpoints for sea mist, and other natural destinations. This makes it ideal for a 1–2 day itinerary combining flower viewing, mountain scenery, and cool-weather experiences in northeastern Thailand.

Overall, the Phu Ruea Christmas Tree Field is not just a photography spot, but a destination that blends agriculture, nature, and community-based tourism during Thailand’s winter season.
