“The temple’s large Thai-style ubosot and brick pagoda are exceptionally ornate, setting it apart from other temples. Inside, the main hall enshrines a replica of Phra Chinnarat as the principal Buddha image, and the walls feature exquisite mural paintings depicting Buddhist history, skillfully created by local artists.”
Wat Nermmit Vipassana was founded in 1978 by Phra Kru Phawan Wisutthiyan (Luang Pho Maha Phan Silavisuttho), a meditation master of the Vipassana tradition, who initially came to practice asceticism at Phu Ploi hill. Originally named “Wat Pa Hua Nai Ung,” the temple later adopted the current name, Wat Nermmit Vipassana.
Construction of the ubosot began on May 5, 1987, and took more than fifteen years to complete, funded entirely by donations from local devotees. The ubosot is made entirely of brick, a rare material for temple construction, and designed in Thai-style architecture. The roof is covered with ceramic tiles, and the floors are laid with pink granite sourced from Loei province.
Inside, the main hall houses a replica of Phra Chinnarat and is decorated with intricate Thai-style mural paintings, depicting the Buddha’s life, the Ten Jatakas, and stories of Vessantara Jataka, which are linked to the Phi Ta Khon festival tradition in Dan Sai. The murals were completed over eight years by local artists.
The temple compound also includes a brick pavilion housing the incorruptible body of Luang Pho Maha Phan and a wax figure of him for worshippers to pay respects. The pavilion itself is decorated with intricate carvings and mural artwork.
The surrounding area is quiet and shaded with gardens and large trees, ideal for meditation. The temple serves as a center for Vipassana practice and a destination for those seeking inner peace. It also offers a rare opportunity to study brick architecture and Buddhist art in Thailand.
