“Rare Sangkhalok ceramics collection, multi-period Buddha images, and the legacy of Phra Sawanworanayok, displayed in a well-organized Thai-style building”

Sawanworanayok National Museum is located in Sawankhalok District, about 38 km from Sukhothai town, with an additional 2 km turn-off leading to the site behind Wat Sawankharam (Wat Klang/Wat Kwang) in Wang Mai Khon area. It is an important center for history and archaeology in the region.

The museum houses a valuable collection of artifacts from archaeological excavations in Sawankhalok, Si Satchanalai, and nearby areas, along with significant donations from Phra Sawanworanayok (Thongkham Jitasiri), a former provincial chief monk of Sukhothai who played a key role in preserving Thailand’s cultural heritage.

The museum is a two-story Thai-style building, clearly divided into two main exhibition sections:

  • Ground Floor: Displays Buddha images from various periods including Dvaravati, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and Rattanakosin, along with finely crafted wooden carvings. It also features Sangkhalok ceramics, presented for educational purposes—covering styles, patterns, production techniques, and development. Many pieces were excavated from key sites such as Ban Ko Noi kilns in Si Satchanalai, as well as ceramics recovered from shipwrecks in the Gulf of Thailand, highlighting ancient maritime trade.
  • Upper Floor: Showcases sculptures and Buddha images from different eras, mostly part of Phra Sawanworanayok’s collection, with some transferred from Ramkhamhaeng National Museum. The exhibits span from pre-Sukhothai to early Rattanakosin periods, illustrating the evolution of Thai Buddhist art.

The museum offers a calm and serene atmosphere, ideal for in-depth exploration of Thai art, archaeology, and the Yom River civilization.

The Sangkhalok ceramics displayed here are key evidence of Thailand’s past economic prosperity and craftsmanship, once widely exported to international markets.

This museum is both an educational resource and a cultural attraction, perfect for students, travelers, and anyone interested in the roots of Thai artistic heritage.
