“Worship the great female ancestor of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Admire an ancient statue of exquisite beauty, fueled by the deep faith of Sukhothai residents that has been passed down through many generations”

Phra Mae Ya Shrine is the most important sacred site in Sukhothai Province. Inside the shrine sits an ancient statue that the local people respect the most. According to historical evidence and long-standing beliefs, this statue represents Queen Sueang, the wife of King Sri Indraditya (the first King of Sukhothai) and the mother of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great. The name Phra Mae Ya reflects a deep connection; she is regarded as the Mother of the King and the Grandmother (Ya) who has protected the people of Sukhothai for centuries.

Regarding its physical appearance, the original Phra Mae Ya statue was carved from Gray Slate, a material commonly used for high-quality art during the Sukhothai period. The statue depicts a noble woman in elegant ancient attire, wearing a high crown and beautiful jewelry. However, when tourists visit today, they will see the statue in a bright golden color. This is due to the power of faith from citizens who have visited to worship over many decades. People bring Gold Leaf to apply onto the statue as an offering. Over time, layers of gold leaf have covered the original stone surface, becoming a visible symbol of faith that remains beautiful through time.

Originally, this statue was enshrined inside a cave on the peak of Khao Narai (Khao Luang), the sacred high mountain of the kingdom. In ancient times, kings and citizens would travel up the mountain to perform worship ceremonies for peace and prosperity. In 1953, the statue was moved to the new shrine by the Yom River in the city center to make it easier for people to visit and pay respects. This relocation connected ancient ancestor worship with the modern lifestyle of Sukhothai. Local beliefs say that Phra Mae Ya is very merciful. Anyone facing suffering or seeking success in their career often comes here to pray, and they often receive the success they hope for.

Every year during the Songkran Festival, a grand celebration for Phra Mae Ya is held. People bring offerings such as "Red and White sweets" (Khanom Daeng Khanom Khao) and flowers. There is also a water-pouring ceremony to ask for blessings. Visiting the Phra Mae Ya Shrine is not just about visiting a historical site; it is about experiencing the foundation of gratitude that Thai people have for the ancestors who built the nation. For tourists visiting Sukhothai, starting the journey by paying respects to Phra Mae Ya is considered a way to honor the city’s guardians and receive positive energy for a prosperous life.
