“Witness the identity of the most prosperous kingdom of the 13th-14th century through the unique lotus-bud stupas and the foundations of ancient royal palaces that mark the birth of Thai civilization.”

Sukhothai Historical Park is the site that most perfectly gathers the foundations of Thai identity. Historically, it served as the first capital of Siam during the 13th-14th century (18th Buddhist Century). This area has been honored by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site, being the cradle of Thai civilization in terms of politics, governance, and fine arts. The remaining ruins showcase the ingenuity of ancient people in urban planning, featuring excellent water management systems and the construction of grand temples as community centers.

The history of this site began with the declaration of independence from the Khmer Empire and the establishment of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Its most significant monarch was King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, who created the first Thai alphabet in 1283, laid the foundation for the Father Governs Son administrative system, and expanded the kingdom's influence across the region. The city layout was a rectangular shape surrounded by three layers of walls and featured an advanced irrigation system called Sareedphong (the ancient dam). Theravada Buddhism from Sri Lanka served as the primary inspiration for building Mahathat Temple, the city's largest temple. Later, Sukhothai became a major hub for producing and exporting Sangkhalok ceramics, famous throughout Asia. Although the kingdom eventually declined and was integrated into Ayutthaya, its historical value remains. The Fine Arts Department began restoration in 1953, leading to its World Heritage designation in 1991. Today, it stands as one of Thailand's most vital learning centers, telling the story of the success and faith of Thai ancestors.

Within the vast grounds of the park, visitors will find fascinating historical evidence such as Si Chum Temple, which houses a massive Buddha image inside a mandapa, famous for the legend of the "Speaking Buddha." There is also evidence of the Sangkhalok ware industry, which was a renowned export throughout Asia during that era. Even though centuries have passed and the center of power shifted to Ayutthaya, Sukhothai still leaves behind a cultural and spiritual legacy for future generations to study through the ancient bricks and stucco patterns that remain beautiful to this day.

This site is a perfect destination for students and tourists who wish to absorb historical knowledge while relaxing. Whether walking through ancient monuments amidst peaceful nature or seeing the reflection of old temples in the ponds during sunset, everything is designed to give a clear and impressive picture of Thailand's past prosperity.

We invite you to experience the charm of the Dawn of Happiness and learn about true Thai history here at Sukhothai Historical Park a World Heritage site that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime.
