“Witness the unique lotus-bud pagoda, a masterpiece of Sukhothai art, and learn about the ancient city planning designed according to the concept of the center of the universe”

Mahathat Temple is the most significant historical site within the Sukhothai Historical Park. It served as the primary royal temple of the kingdom since the establishment of the capital in the 13th century (18th Buddhist Century). This temple is located exactly at the center of Sukhothai city, following the belief of the Navel of the City or the center of the universe. History records that several kings of the Sukhothai era, such as King Ramkhamhaeng the Great and King Mahathammaracha I (Li Thai), collaborated in constructing and restoring this grand temple to house the Buddha's relics and serve as the spiritual heart of the kingdom. UNESCO has designated this site as a World Heritage site for being a masterpiece of early Thai art and for its complex and beautiful urban planning, which is among the finest in Southeast Asia.

The most iconic architectural feature of the temple is the Lotus-bud Pagoda (Phum Khao Bin), which is an authentic identity of Sukhothai art developed by ancient Thai craftsmen. This central pagoda is surrounded by eight smaller satellite stupas, each decorated with a blend of Khmer and Lanna artistic styles. Located in front of the main pagoda is the Great Vihara (Assembly Hall). In the past, this hall was used for important royal religious ceremonies. Today, many large laterite columns still stand on the massive base, demonstrating the advanced and durable engineering techniques of that era. Additionally, a large stucco Buddha image in the Subduing Mara posture is enshrined within the temple hall, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere for visitors.

Another rare and prominent feature of this temple is the Phra Attharot, a large standing Buddha image measuring 9 meters (18 cubits) in height_. These images are enshrined in mandapas flanking both sides of the main pagoda. The statues reflect the deep faith and the progress in casting large-scale Buddha images during that time. Furthermore, at the base of the main pagoda, you will find one of the most beautiful stucco reliefs: 168 Buddhist disciples walking in a clockwise procession (Thaksinawart) with their hands pressed together in prayer. These delicate stucco patterns are vital historical evidence showing the costumes and religious beliefs of ancient Sukhothai people, preserved for over 700 years.

Today, the Mahathat Temple is a world-class historical learning center and a must-visit destination. During the evening, as the sunlight passes through the main pagoda and the ancient columns, it creates a magnificent reflection in the "Traphang" (ponds) surrounding the temple. The spatial design, which balances water sources and structures, showcases the excellent water management wisdom of the Sukhothai people. Visiting this temple allows you to experience the past prosperity known as the "Dawn of Happiness" (Sukhothai) and deeply understand the cultural foundations that have become the national identity of Thailand today.
