“Witness the majestic bronze statue amidst the World Heritage site and explore history through the replica stone inscription that tells the story of the origin of Thai language and culture”

King Ramkhamhaeng Monument was built to honor and commemorate the profound grace of the third monarch of the Phra Ruang Dynasty, who led Sukhothai into its most prosperous era in history. The statue is cast from a copper and brass alloy with a dark finish. It is twice the size of the actual King, standing 3 meters tall. He is depicted sitting gracefully on a throne modeled after the "Mananghasila Asana" throne. In his right hand, he holds a manuscript, symbolizing his immense wisdom and expert skills in governance. The monument is located north of Wat Mahathat, at the center of the Sukhothai Historical Park, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

History records that King Ramkhamhaeng the Great was one of the greatest warrior-kings and administrators. He unified the kingdom and expanded its territory extensively. His most significant achievement and the foundation of the nation was the creation of the Thai alphabet (Sukhothai Script) in 1283. This gave the Thai people their own unique linguistic identity that has continued to the present day. He governed the country using the Father Governs Son system. He hung a bell at the palace gate so that any citizen in distress could ring it to seek justice directly from the King. This close relationship created a peaceful society, famously described in the stone inscriptions as "In the water, there are fish; in the fields, there is rice," reflecting the absolute abundance of ancient Thailand.

Beyond governance, the King promoted a free-market economy with policies that allowed citizens to trade freely without taxes. He was also the leader who supported the production of Sangkhalok ceramics, which became a world-renowned export for the kingdom. In terms of religion, he invited high-ranking monks from Nakhon Si Thammarat to spread Theravada Buddhism (Lankavamsa), establishing Sukhothai as a strong center of faith. The bronze reliefs at the monument's base depict key accomplishments, such as his victory in an elephant duel against Khun Sam Chon and his royal duties in caring for the well-being of his people.

In the surrounding area, a replica of the King Ramkhamhaeng Inscription is displayed for tourists to see the origins of Thai writing and the messages that record the ancient Sukhothai way of life. Visiting this site is more than just paying respect for good fortune according to Thai beliefs; it is a journey to study the foundations of Thai culture, politics, and economy. This monument is a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to experience the spirit of the "Dawn of Happiness" and take pride in the 700-year history of the Sukhothai Kingdom.
