“Explore the bell-shaped stupa on a high base, encircled by 39 plaster elephants, with decorated elephants at each corner and 17 low-relief disciples above the stupa, in a tranquil World Heritage environment.”
Wat Chang Lom is one of the most important ancient sites in Si Satchanalai Historical Park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located south of Khao Phanom Phloeng in the middle of the ancient city, it was built from laterite plaster, reportedly by King Ramkhamhaeng around AD 1285 (B.E. 1828) to enshrine Buddha relics.
The main stupa is bell-shaped on a multi-tiered square base, surrounded by 39 half-body plaster elephants, while the four corner elephants are fully decorated, symbolizing the cardinal directions. Each elephant has slightly different details, showing the fine craftsmanship of the Sukhothai period.
Above the base are niches with Buddha images in Mara Vichaya posture, and the stupa’s upper platform features 17 low-relief disciples walking in meditation, demonstrating rare Sukhothai artistic skills.
Lesser-Known Facts:
-
The elephants were originally painted gold and red, now mostly faded.
-
The 39 elephants may represent the Buddha’s disciples, while the four corner elephants symbolize protection from all directions.
-
The stupa contains a hidden water drainage system to prevent moisture damage.

Small hidden chambers under the base may have been used to store additional relics or sacred objects.
The surrounding area is peaceful and shaded, ideal for historical exploration, art study, and photography.
