“Stand at the highest point in Sukhothai, 1,200 meters above sea level. Experience the morning sea of mist and the final golden light of the day at Phra Mae Ya Peak—a sacred area filled with the legends and beliefs of the ancient city”
Phra Mae Ya Peak is one of the four major peaks of Ramkhamhaeng National Park, widely known as Khao Luang Sukhothai. Standing approximately 1,200 meters above mean sea level, it is the highest of the four peaks. The peak is named after Phra Mae Ya, a highly revered guardian spirit of Sukhothai. According to legend, this area was a residence or associated with Queen Chitra Devi, the consort of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great.
Reaching the summit of Phra Mae Ya Peak is no easy task. Hikers must persevere through a steep trek known among locals as Prab Sian (The Expert Defeater). The distance is about 3.7 kilometers from the park office. While it may not sound far, the near-constant steep incline means the hike typically takes 3 to 4 hours. The trail passes through lush hill evergreen forests with rare plant species, and the air becomes increasingly cooler as the altitude rises.
Once at the top, the breathtaking view makes all the exhaustion vanish. The area is a wide, grassy field with no large trees to block the view, offering a 360-degree panorama. On clear days, you can see emerald green rice fields and the city of Sukhothai stretching as far as the eye can see. This is the most beautiful Sunset Viewpoint, where orange light slowly fades behind the silhouettes of complex mountain ranges, leaving a lasting impression on every trekker.
Beyond its natural beauty, Phra Mae Ya Peak is a place of great faith. In the past, people of Sukhothai would hike up here to perform religious ceremonies. Today, the park provides nearby camping grounds for visitors to enjoy the cold weather and stargaze at night. Conquering Phra Mae Ya Peak is more than just physical exercise; it is a test of spirit and a way to connect with the grand history and nature of the Sukhothai Kingdom.
