“Enjoy the towering 4th tier waterfall and the chance to witness the rainbow phenomenon between 14:00 – 16:00, along with a pleasant and accessible forest trail”
Sai Rung Waterfall is one of the most remarkable natural attractions in Ramkhamhaeng National Park, located on the western side of the Khao Luang mountain range. The waterfall cascades from high cliffs over ancient rock layers, creating a stunning blend of natural power and serene beauty.
The unique highlight of this waterfall is the Rainbow Effect, caused by fine water mist reflecting sunlight at the right angle. This phenomenon is especially visible in the afternoon, when sunlight creates a vivid rainbow across the waterfall, giving Sai Rung (“Rainbow”) its name and making it a rare and memorable sight.
The waterfall consists of four main tiers, each with distinct characteristics. The lower tier features a wide rock platform and natural pool, ideal for relaxing and swimming. The middle tiers flow gently over rocks and tree roots, while the 4th tier is the most impressive, with a steep vertical drop that generates a large amount of mist. This creates a humid microclimate where mosses, ferns, and epiphytic plants thrive abundantly.
The walking trail to the waterfall is well-developed and easy to access, with distances ranging from 880 meters to 1,200 meters depending on the tier. Along the way, visitors will pass through a rich mixed deciduous and dry evergreen forest, home to diverse plant species such as bamboo, large hardwood trees, and local herbs, as well as small wildlife and various bird species.
Sai Rung Waterfall also serves as an important headwater source feeding into the Yom River, playing a crucial role in the local ecosystem and agriculture. Nearby communities rely on this water source for fruit orchards, including mango and longan, along with other economic crops.
Seasonally, the waterfall offers different experiences. During the rainy season (June–October), the waterfall is at its most powerful and visually striking. In the cool season (November–February), the water is clear and the weather is pleasant, ideal for photography and relaxation. In the hot season (March–May), although water levels decrease, the area remains quiet and shaded, perfect for a peaceful retreat.
Sai Rung Waterfall is not only a scenic destination but also a valuable site for learning about geology, ecosystems, and the relationship between nature and local communities, making it suitable for all types of travelers, including families and eco-tourism enthusiasts.
