Si Satchanalai Historical Park is located in Mueang Kao, Si Satchanalai, on the right bank of the Yom River. Covering over 45 square kilometers, the park includes zones inside and outside the ancient city walls, as well as sites on surrounding hills, reflecting a well-planned ancient urban layout in harmony with nature.
Originally known as “Chaliang”, the area was later developed and renamed “Si Satchanalai” during the reign of the Phra Ruang dynasty, when Sukhothai was established and the city became an important administrative center.
Archaeological Significance:
The park contains a vast number of ancient monuments and artifacts, with over 134 officially surveyed sites and more than 200 locations across the area, showcasing the city’s historical prosperity in religion, art, and urban planning.
Key Attractions:
- Wat Chang Lom (Wat Chang Lom): A Sri Lankan-style stupa surrounded by 39 elephant sculptures
- Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo (Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo): A collection of chedis displaying Burmese, Sri Lankan, and Sukhothai artistic styles
- Wat Nang Phaya (Wat Nang Phaya): Famous for its intricate floral stucco designs, a masterpiece of Sukhothai art
- Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Chaliang (Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Chaliang): Located about 3 km south outside the city walls, also known as Wat Phra Prang, featuring a large laterite prang with a square base approximately 22.50 meters wide. Inside enshrines a smaller prang containing Buddhist relics
Historical Importance:
The park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet Historical Parks, representing the golden age of Thai civilization in art, architecture, and city planning.
How to Get There
By Car:
- From Sukhothai city, take Highway No. 101 northbound toward Sawankhalok – Si Satchanalai for approximately 55 km
