“Enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in Khon Kaen province, have fun with a raft trip and riverside dining, and stroll through the lush, shady gardens within the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) grounds.”
Ubol Ratana Dam, or "Phong Dam," as it's popularly known in Khon Kaen, is the first multipurpose dam project in northeastern Thailand. Construction began in 1964, and it was graciously opened by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit on March 14, 1966.
The dam is designed as a rockfill dam with a clay core, 885 meters long and 32 meters high. It dams the Phong River, a vital waterway, and primarily serves to generate hydroelectric power. It also provides immense benefits to agriculture in Khon Kaen and Maha Sarakham provinces, irrigating over 300,000 rai of land. Beyond its economic benefits, the large reservoir, covering over 410 square kilometers, is a significant freshwater fishing ground for the region, creating stable livelihoods and income for local residents.
In terms of tourism... The area surrounding Ubolratana Dam has been developed into a national-level recreational area. Within the dam grounds, there are beautifully landscaped gardens and clean, waterfront promenades. Tourists can stroll along the dam's embankment or drive along the embankment to enjoy the cool breeze and breathtaking views of the vast expanse of water, surrounded by the Phu Phan Kham mountain range.
In addition, there are several popular check-in points, such as "Bang Saen 2," located about 10 kilometers from the dam. This riverside beach offers a similar atmosphere to the sea, with floating restaurants serving a variety of fresh freshwater fish dishes and recreational activities like tubing, banana boating, and jet skiing. For those who prefer tranquility, the dam also boasts an 18-hole golf course, considered one of the most beautiful dam-side golf courses in Thailand. There are also peaceful accommodations where you can enjoy the fresh morning air. And, of course, a visit to pay respects to "Phra Phuttha Siri Sattarat," or Luang Pho Chet Kasat (Seven Kings Buddha), a statue located at the dam's head, is a must for seeking blessings before returning home.
With its complete package of beautiful nature, fun water activities, and a long history of development, Ubolratana Dam is more than just a power plant; it's a vital "lung" and one of the most important tourist hubs in Khon Kaen province, accessible year-round.
