“The oldest Khmer temple in Thailand, featuring Pre-Angkorian (Prei Kmeng) art, four brick towers with well-preserved structures, and the legend of Neang Do Thom”

Prasat Phum Pon is an early Khmer archaeological site, believed to have been built around the 12th–13th Buddhist centuries (Pre-Angkorian period). It predates many major temples in the region and reflects the early presence and influence of Khmer civilization in northeastern Thailand.

The site consists of four brick towers arranged on a shared base, with a central main sanctuary. It is widely believed to have served as a Hindu temple, particularly dedicated to Shaivism (worship of Shiva), based on architectural forms and discovered artifacts.

A distinctive feature is its ancient brick construction without mortar, using interlocking techniques and natural resins. The tightly fitted bricks demonstrate remarkable craftsmanship, and despite being over a thousand years old, the main structures remain clearly visible.

Key architectural elements such as door frames and lintels made of sandstone still survive. Although some parts are damaged or missing, traces of simple carvings in the Prei Kmeng style can still be seen, representing an early phase before the more elaborate Angkorian art.

The surrounding area is quiet, green, and peaceful, making it ideal for historical study and photography. Today, the site is maintained by government authorities, with informational signage and a small exhibition space explaining its history and archaeological findings.

Additionally, the site is connected to the local legend of “Neang Do Thom” (the Lady of Large Breasts), a tragic love story that enriches the cultural and emotional depth of the . Visitors not only explore ancient ruins but also experience local beliefs and storytelling traditions tied to the past.
