Phu Wiang National Park is far more than just a lush forest in the Northeastern region of Thailand; it serves as a massive geological chronicle preserving the world's secrets from over 130 million years ago. The park features a unique topographical structure, characterized by a ring-shaped mountain range that encircles a vast inner valley. This natural fortress has created a specialized ecosystem with high biodiversity, ranging from deciduous dipterocarp forests to dry evergreen forests. The most legendary aspect of Phu Wiang is its status as the site where dinosaur fossils were first discovered in Thailand. The journey began in 1976 when a single bone fragment was accidentally found, which was later identified as belonging to a large herbivorous dinosaur. This discovery sparked extensive explorations that led to the uncovering of several major excavation pits scattered throughout the park. Notable discoveries include the long-necked herbivore Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae and the formidable carnivore Siamotyrannus isanensis, recognized as one of the oldest ancestors of the Tyrannosaurus Rex ever found.

Beyond its prehistoric significance, Phu Wiang National Park offers breathtaking natural attractions that captivate every visitor. Trekking trails lead adventurers through shaded woodlands to Tat Fa Waterfall, a majestic cascade featuring steep cliffs and expansive stone plateaus. Other highlights include the scenic Thap Phraya Suea Waterfall and the Pha Chom Tawan Viewpoint. This viewpoint is a favorite spot for visitors to witness the first light of dawn as mist rolls over the Phu Wiang mountains. The panoramic vista from the summit, looking down at the entire Wiang Kao district, provides a profound sense of the majestic nature that has sustained local life for generations.

• From Khon Kaen city, take Highway 12 (Khon Kaen-Chum Phae). Upon reaching Nong Ruea District, turn right onto Highway 2038. Drive straight until you reach Wiang Kao District and follow the signs to the national park office. The total distance is approximately 85 kilometers.

• It is recommended to begin your learning experience at the "Phu Wiang Dinosaur Research Center and Museum" before proceeding to the actual excavation sites within the national park.

• If you plan to hike, be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as the trails to the various excavation sites are quite long.

• If you wish to hike the nature trails or visit the fossil sites, inquire with park officials in advance and strictly adhere to park regulations.

Opening Hours:

• Standard Hours: Open daily from 08:30 AM to 04:30 PM.

• Pha Chom Tawan Viewpoint: Accessible from early morning (around 05:00 AM) for visitors who wish to see the sunrise and the sea of mist.

• Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum (Outside the park area): Open 09:00 AM – 05:00 PM (Closed on Mondays).
