“The sacred Ayutthaya-period Sri Lankan stupa and the grand assembly hall housing Luang Pho Prathan Thao, a revered historic Chiang Saen Buddha image.”

Wat Phraborom That Thung Yang, also known as Wat Phraborom That Thung Yang, is a historically significant temple in Uttaradit Province. Located in Thung Yang Subdistrict, Lablae District, it is an ancient temple with connections to Thung Yang, a former community and frontier town on northern trade routes. Most scholars and local sources believe the temple's development dates back to the late Sukhothai period and underwent continuous restoration in later eras. This resulted in architecture that blends various periods, including Sukhothai, Lanna, and Ayutthaya.

A key feature of the temple is the main bell-shaped pagoda, built in the Sri Lankan style, standing on a multi-tiered square base. This style reflects the influence of Sri Lankan Buddhism spreading to Siam, and it is believed to enshrine relics of the Buddha, making the temple revered as the "Phra Borom That" (relic temple) of Thung Yang. Around the pagoda are smaller components and traces of restorations from different eras, reflecting its long-standing use and the faith it has received over hundreds of years.

Another important feature is the main vihara (assembly hall), the front building, which features northern Thai vernacular architecture with tiered roofs and decorations reflecting Lanna art. Inside the temple is enshrined an important Buddha statue known locally as "Luang Pho Prathan Thao," a stucco Buddha image in the Maravijaya posture that is highly revered. Remnants of old murals depicting the life of Buddha and local folklore, such as the story of Sang Thong, can also be found. Although some parts are faded due to age, they retain significant artistic and historical value.

Wat Phra Borom That Thung Yang is also important as the center of the annual "Atthami Bucha" ceremony. This ceremony reenacts the cremation of the Buddha's body according to Theravada Buddhist tradition, a rare tradition still practiced in Thailand and clearly reflecting the faith of the local community. Therefore, the temple grounds are not only a place of religious worship but also an important historical, archaeological, and cultural learning resource for Uttaradit Province.
