“Sao Chaliang features large mushroom-shaped stone pillars formed by natural erosion over millions of years. Each pillar has unique shapes and patterns standing tall on a wide rocky plain, making it a favorite photo spot in Pha Taem National Park.”

Sao Chaliang is a prominent natural attraction within Pha Taem National Park in Ubon Ratchathani. These towering mushroom-shaped stone pillars are scattered across a broad rocky plateau and were formed through the prolonged erosion by wind, rain, and water over millions of years. The upper layer consists of hard, dark sandstone that protects the softer rock below, which has been eroded away to create the distinctive mushroom shapes.

There are several pillars of varying sizes, some reaching over 5 meters tall. The stones display natural stripes and color variations caused by mineral deposits and geological changes over millions of years, giving each pillar a unique appearance.

Surrounding the pillars are unusual rock formations and drought-tolerant plants, including small wildflowers that bloom during the rainy season, adding vibrant color to the landscape. The early morning and late afternoon sunlight casts beautiful shadows of the pillars on the rocky floor, making it an excellent spot for photography and nature appreciation.

Sao Chaliang is an iconic symbol of Pha Taem National Park, which covers a large protected area of forests, mountains, and cliffs along the Mekong River. Nearby attractions include ancient rock paintings estimated to be around 3,000 years old, Pha Chanadai viewpoint known for being the first place in Thailand to see sunrise, and wildflower fields that bloom in different seasons. Visitors often include Sao Chaliang in their main itinerary when exploring the park.
