“Stunning prehistoric rock paintings showing ancient human life and beliefs, set against scenic cliffs and views of the Mekong River.”
Pha Taem is one of the most famous and important archaeological sites in Thailand, located within Pha Taem National Park in Ubon Ratchathani. The ancient rock paintings on the cliffs date back 3,000–4,000 years to the Neolithic period, reflecting the daily life, society, and beliefs of early humans.
Most of the paintings depict wild animals such as elephants, buffalo, and birds, as well as human figures engaged in activities like hunting, performing rituals, and dancing. Some images show religious or ceremonial symbols, providing key evidence for archaeologists studying early human culture and beliefs.
The paintings were first discovered by local villagers and researchers between 1967–1972. Subsequent official studies by the Fine Arts Department revealed that the pigments were made from iron ore, white clay, and finely ground plants, allowing the colors to remain vivid after thousands of years.
Pha Taem is not only a rock art site but also a scenic location atop cliffs overlooking the Mekong River, with stunning natural views of cliffs, waterfalls, and forests. Visiting Pha Taem combines learning about history and archaeology with experiencing natural beauty.
Visitors can follow nature trails to see multiple painting sites, including cliff viewpoints and large rock terraces. There are also excellent spots to watch sunrise and sunset, making it ideal for photography and relaxation.
Today, Pha Taem is a key archaeological learning center. Researchers from around the world study it to understand ancient human culture in northeastern Thailand. It is also a major cultural tourism destination in Ubon Ratchathani.
