Wat Nong Pa Phong is an internationally renowned forest monastery in the Vipassana tradition, founded in 1954 by Phra Bodhiyan Thera (Luang Pu Cha Suphattho), who played a key role in reviving and spreading the forest monastery tradition in Thailand. Luang Pu Cha emphasized simple, calm, and straightforward meditation practice, teaching mindfulness and living a disciplined monastic life.

The monastery is located in a serene natural forest, making the surrounding environment a tool for mindfulness and meditation. The atmosphere is simple and strict, with monks and practitioners following the forest monk routine, including alms round, eating only one meal a day, living in the forest, and practicing meditation daily. This disciplined lifestyle has made Wat Nong Pa Phong a model of monastic practice in line with Buddhist precepts.

A major attraction is the hall containing the preserved body of Luang Pu Cha. Although he passed away, his body has not decayed, becoming a spiritual focal point for devotees worldwide. There is also a museum at the monastery that displays Luang Pu Cha’s personal belongings, documents, photographs, and records, reflecting his life and teachings.

Luang Pu Cha was also known for teaching Western monks and could communicate basic teachings in English. As a result, Wat Nong Pa Phong has become an international center for the propagation of Buddhism, with over 300 affiliated monasteries worldwide, including in Thailand, the UK, Australia, the USA, Canada, Germany, France, New Zealand, and other countries.

• From Ubon Ratchathani city, take the Warin Chamrap – Kantharalak road (Highway 217) for approximately 12 km. Look for the sign to Wat Nong Pa Phong, then turn in and drive about 2 km to reach the monastery. Access is possible by private car or local minibus from Warin Chamrap.

• Dress modestly; avoid shorts or sleeveless shirts.

• Keep noise to a minimum to respect those practicing meditation.
