“A royal forest monastery featuring magnificent Lanna architecture, a peaceful atmosphere, and a close historical connection with Princess Dara Rasmi.”

Wat Pa Dara Phirom Royal Monastery (Wat Pa Dara Phirom) was originally an abandoned cemetery located beside Suan Chao Sabai, the residence of Princess Consort Dara Rasmi, royal consort of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). When Venerable Ajahn Mun Bhuridatto and his group of forest monks arrived to practice meditation in this area, Princess Dara Rasmi developed deep faith in their practice and donated this land for the establishment of a monastery. She also bestowed the name "Wat Pa Dara Phirom" as a memorial to herself. The monastery was later elevated to the status of a Third-Class Royal Monastery (Common Category). Today, it stands as one of Northern Thailand's most significant forest meditation temples, reflecting the close relationship between the Lanna royal family and Thai Buddhism.

Masterpiece of Lanna Buddhist Art: The temple showcases some of the finest examples of traditional Lanna architecture, created by highly skilled craftsmen. The magnificent Main Assembly Hall (Viharn Luang) is constructed primarily of wood and decorated with intricate carved gables, elaborate stucco work, and colorful glass mosaics. Inside enshrines Phra Sayamphu Lokanath, a beautiful Sukhothai-style Buddha image in the meditation posture. Visitors can also admire the Ordination Hall, Phra Chao Than Jai Pavilion, Replica Four Sacred Buddha Footprints Chedi, Lanna-style Tripitaka Library, and Meditation Hall, all of which demonstrate the artistic excellence and cultural heritage of Northern Thailand.

A Center of the Forest Meditation Tradition: The monastery faithfully preserves the traditions established by Venerable Ajahn Mun Bhuridatto. The temple grounds are shaded by large mature trees, creating a peaceful environment ideal for meditation, walking meditation, and Buddhist practice. Unlike many tourist-oriented temples, the atmosphere here remains quiet, simple, and spiritually focused, making it a favorite destination for both Buddhist practitioners and visitors seeking inner peace.

Historical and Cultural Significance: Beyond its architectural beauty, the monastery holds great historical importance through its close association with Princess Consort Dara Rasmi, whose contributions strengthened the relationship between the Kingdom of Lanna and the Siamese Royal Court. The temple preserves historical artifacts, old photographs, and valuable records that illustrate the development of Chiang Mai during the late Rattanakosin period, allowing visitors to appreciate the region's history, art, and traditional Lanna way of life.

A Year-Round Cultural Destination: Wat Pa Dara Phirom offers a serene atmosphere throughout the year, especially during the cool season when the weather is pleasant. On important Buddhist holy days such as Makha Bucha Day, Visakha Bucha Day, Asalha Bucha Day, and Buddhist Lent, the monastery hosts merit-making ceremonies, candlelight processions, and traditional Lanna religious activities. Visitors can admire the temple's architecture, photograph its remarkable artistic details, pay respect to the sacred relics, and relax in its peaceful natural surroundings. It is truly one of Chiang Mai's must-visit royal monasteries for those interested in Buddhist heritage, history, and Lanna culture.
