Than Thong Waterfall is situated within the Than Thong Arboretum in Pha Tang Sub-district, Sangkhom District, Nong Khai Province. It is a significant natural attraction managed by the Protected Areas Regional Office 10 (Udon Thani) under the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Originally part of the Pan Phrao and Kaeng Kai National Forest Reserve, the area was officially established as an arboretum by the Royal Forest Department in 1994 to serve as a conservation site and botanical learning center, covering approximately 100 rai. The geological structure primarily consists of sandstone and shale that have eroded over time to form extensive flat rock plateaus. The water originates from the Huay Sai Ngua stream, cascading down through rocky tiers for over 2 kilometers before eventually plunging into the Mekong River.

The ecological richness surrounding Than Thong Waterfall is characterized by a mix of dry evergreen and mixed deciduous forests. Notable flora in the area includes Irvingia malayana (Kabok), Lagerstroemia (Tabak), and various bamboo species, providing a dense canopy that keeps the area cool and shaded year-round. This vibrant ecosystem also supports diverse small wildlife and insects, particularly various butterfly species that are frequently seen after the rainy season. In terms of tourism, this waterfall is one of the most accessible landmarks in Nong Khai because the water flows directly adjacent to Highway 211 (Nong Khai-Chiang Khan), making it a popular rest stop for travelers traversing the scenic Mekong riverside route.

During the peak season from June to November, the water volume is at its most beautiful, spreading across small rocky cliffs that stand 3-5 meters high in certain sections. These low tiers create safe natural basins for both children and adults to swim. Beyond the charm of the waterfall itself, the entrance to the arboretum serves as a hub for local life. Villagers bring seasonal agricultural products to sell, such as dried bananas and Rai Muang pineapples, alongside popular Isan culinary staples like grilled chicken and papaya salad. Visiting Than Thong Waterfall is thus an immersive experience that combines the tranquility of nature with the authentic taste of local northeastern Thai culture.

• From Nong Khai city center, take Highway 211 (Nong Khai–Si Chiang Mai–Sangkhom). The waterfall is located near kilometers 97-98. It is extremely easy to find as it sits right on the roadside, acting as a gateway to other attractions like Pha Tak Suea Skywalk.

• Visit during the rainy season from June to October to experience the waterfall at its fullest.

• Check the weather forecast before traveling, as heavy rain can lead to dangerous flash floods.

• Be extremely careful when walking on the rocks, as they can be very slippery from moss.
