“Magnificent three-tiered limestone waterfalls cascading into emerald pools, surrounded by lush jungle. A serene paradise perfect for nature lovers, swimming, and capturing stunning photography.”

Than Thip Waterfall, widely known among locals as "Tad Serm Waterfall," is situated within the protected boundaries of the Khao Phan Phan and Khao Kong Phanom National Forest Reserves in Ban Muang Subdistrict, Sangkhom District, Nong Khai. Formally established as a forest park on May 1, 1998, the site was designated to preserve a vital watershed and one of the province's most significant natural landmarks. The topography is characterized by steep mountain ranges that form part of the Phu Phan range, covered in lush dry evergreen and mixed deciduous forests. This rich ecosystem is home to valuable timber species such as Daeng (Xylia xylocarpa), Makha Mong (Afzelia xylocarpa), and various bamboo species that thrive along the banks of the Than Thip Creek, the primary water source that feeds the waterfall throughout the year.

Geologically, Than Thip is a distinctive limestone waterfall divided into three primary tiers, each offering a unique visual experience. The first tier stands roughly 30 meters high, featuring a broad rocky incline where water cascades into a spacious natural basin below—a safe and popular spot for swimming. This level is well-equipped with managed pathways and wooden bridges for convenient sightseeing and photography. The second tier presents a series of streams flowing over intricately shaped rock formations, sculpted by calcium carbonate deposits over millennia into beautiful, rippled patterns. The third and uppermost tier is the most magnificent, where the water plunges down a steep cliff, creating a fine mist that nourishes the dense carpets of mosses and ferns clinging to the surrounding rocks.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the forest park serves as a sanctuary for local biodiversity. Visitors can observe rare plant species and a variety of forest insects, particularly during the rainy season when the greenery of mosses and lichens is most vibrant. The headwater ecosystem here acts as a natural sponge, absorbing rainwater and gradually releasing it into the Mekong River. The area is managed by the Protected Areas Regional Office 10 (Udon Thani) under the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation. Dedicated officials ensure visitor safety and maintain strict cleanliness standards to preserve the natural integrity of the forest, providing a high-quality eco-tourism experience for travelers from all over the country.

How to Get There
  • From Nong Khai town, take Highway 211 (Nong Khai-Chiang Khan) towards Sangkhom district. Around kilometer 97-98, there will be a sign indicating the Thanthip Waterfall National Park. Turn left and continue for approximately 2 kilometers to reach a parking area. From there, it's just a 100-meter walk to the first level of the waterfall.

Travel Tips
  • Wear high-grip shoes to prevent slipping on mossy limestone rocks and wet surfaces.

  • Use extra caution when hiking to the second and third tiers due to steep paths.
