Huay Tueng Thao Reservoir is much more than just a source of irrigation for local agriculture; it has been thoughtfully developed into one of the most vital recreational spots in Mae Rim district, managed by the 7th Infantry Division. This area acts as an oasis located just a short distance from the bustling Chiang Mai city center, allowing visitors to escape the chaos and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature within minutes. The surrounding terrain is embraced by the Doi Suthep-Pui mountain range, which serves as a majestic natural backdrop that shifts colors depending on the sunlight throughout the day. The calm surface of the reservoir often reflects the sky and mountains, creating a scene as beautiful as a painting.

A major highlight that draws tourists worldwide is the Giant Straw Sculpture project. It began with a massive straw King Kong standing prominently in the middle of lush green rice fields. Today, it has expanded into a diverse collection of straw animals, including deer families, wild boars, and elephants. These sculptures are intricately crafted using natural local materials, reflecting profound creativity and the successful integration of agriculture into tourism. Visitors can walk along long bamboo bridges stretching across the fields to experience these sculptures up close, offering unique photography angles, especially during the rice-growing season when the green stalks sway in the breeze or the harvest season when the fields turn a brilliant gold.

Beyond admiring the straw artwork, this reservoir is famous for its lakeside dining experience, with over 20 restaurants lining the shore. Each shop offers private bamboo huts extending over the water where visitors can gather for local meals while soaking their feet. Signature dishes include spicy "Dancing Shrimp," herb-grilled fish, and roasted chicken. The experience of dining amidst the cool breeze blowing across the water creates a deep sense of relaxation and serves as a perfect way to recharge. For active visitors, there are swan-shaped pedal boats for rent to cruise the reservoir, or for the more adventurous, Stand-Up Paddleboards (SUP) are available to experience the silence of the lake up close.

For health enthusiasts, Huay Tueng Thao is a favorite spot for jogging and cycling around the reservoir, with a total loop distance of approximately 4 kilometers. This route is shaded, scenic, and safe from heavy traffic, making it a perfect exercise space in the early morning or evening before sunset. Additionally, there are designated camping zones for those who wish to experience nature overnight, as well as facilities for group activities and youth camps. The systematic management by military personnel ensures that the area remains exceptionally clean and secure, providing peace of mind for all groups of tourists, whether they visit as a family, a group of friends, or a solo traveler.

• From Chiang Mai city, drive along the Canal Road toward Mae Rim. Pass the International Exhibition and Convention Centre and the 700th Anniversary Stadium. Look for the "Huay Tueng Thao" entrance sign on your left. Cross the bridge and follow the main road to the entry fee booth.

• To experience the most tranquility and avoid crowds, visit before 09:00 AM when the air is still cool and the soft morning light is perfect for photographing the straw sculptures and the reservoir scenery.

• If you plan to dine at the lakeside bamboo huts, aim to arrive before 11:00 AM to secure the best spots with prime views, as these popular huts fill up quickly, especially on weekends and public holidays.

• Bring sun protection such as hats, sunglasses, or sunscreen if you wish to explore the giant straw sculptures and the bamboo bridges, as the rice field zone is an open area with limited shade during the daytime.
