“Pay respect to Phra Phuttha Mongkhon Maharat, ride the Hatyai Cable Car, and enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Hat Yai city from Khao Kho Hong.”

Hat Yai Municipal Park is a large green space covering more than 900 rai, located on the foothills and hilltops of Khao Kho Hong. Its diverse topography includes flat recreational areas, a large reservoir, and elevated viewpoints, making it suitable for both leisure activities and cultural tourism in one destination.

The park is divided into several main zones, each with distinct characteristics.

The lowland zone serves as the main recreational area. It features a large reservoir that forms the park’s central landscape. Visitors can rent paddle boats to enjoy the water, while surrounding jogging and walking paths provide a shaded environment ideal for exercise in the morning and evening. The area also includes playgrounds, outdoor fitness stations, and family relaxation spaces.

As visitors move higher up, they enter the cultural and spiritual zone. The key landmark is Phra Phuttha Mongkhon Maharat, a large Buddha statue in the “Abhaya mudra” (gesture of reassurance), visible from a great distance and regarded as a symbolic landmark of Hat Yai. Nearby is also a large white jade Guan Yin statue, attracting many visitors from Malaysia and Singapore, creating a blend of Thai Buddhist and Chinese spiritual influence.

Another major highlight is the Hatyai Cable Car, Thailand’s first cable car system, which connects two hilltops of Khao Kho Hong. The ride offers aerial views of forests and the city, taking approximately 5–7 minutes per trip and is especially popular during weekends and holidays.

In terms of scenery, the hilltop viewpoint is one of the park’s main highlights. On clear days, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Hat Yai city extending all the way to Songkhla Lake. At sunset, the city reflects warm golden light, while at night it transforms into a sparkling sea of city lights.

Overall, the park is not only a recreational area but also a major destination for nature, spirituality, and panoramic viewpoints in southern Thailand. It is suitable for general tourists, photography enthusiasts, and those seeking a peaceful yet complete escape close to the city.

How to Get There
  • By car: From Hat Yai city center, take Kanchanawanit Road heading toward Songkhla Province. The drive takes about 10–15 minutes, and the park entrance will be on the right-hand side. The road leading up to Khao Kho Hong is well-paved but steep and winding, so careful driving is recommended, especially during rainy weather.

Travel Tips
  • Visit Khao Kho Hong around 5:00 PM when the weather is cooler and you can enjoy the sunset view. Staying until night is recommended to see the city lights of Hat Yai at their most beautiful.
  • If you plan to take the Hatyai Cable Car, check the weather in advance, as it may close during strong winds.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the area is hilly with steep paths.
