“The sacred pagoda for Wednesday-borns, enshrining Arahant relics, featuring unique octagonal architecture and honoring the spiritual legacy of legendary monk Luang Pu Kamphan.”

Phra That Maha Chai, located within Wat That Mahachai in Pla Pak District, Nakhon Phanom, stands as one of the most significant satellite pagodas of the revered Phra That Phanom. It is spiritually recognized as the auspicious pilgrimage site for those born on Wednesday (daytime). The construction of the original pagoda began in 1952, led by the venerable Luang Pu Kamphan Khosapanyo, a highly respected master of Vipassana meditation in the Mekong sub-region. Originally, the stupa was an octagonal structure, measuring 16 meters in height_. However, in 1993, a major renovation took place to encase the original stupa with a grander structure to commemorate the 50th Anniversary (Golden Jubilee) of King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great’s accession to the throne, resulting in the magnificent 40-meter-tall white and gold pagoda seen today.

The architectural essence of Phra That Mahachai is unique due to its bell-shaped octagonal form, a departure from the traditional square-based Lan Xang style prevalent in other regional pagodas. The interior enshrines precious relics of the Lord Buddha and the Arahant relics of Phra Anna Kondanna, Phra Sariputta, and Phra Anuruddha, which were ceremoniously brought from Sri Lanka. Adjacent to the pagoda, the temple’s main chapel houses "Phra Buddha Chaiyasit," an exquisite Buddha image in the subduing Mara posture, remarkably carved from the largest single piece of sweet neem wood in Thailand. The chapel walls are also adorned with intricate murals depicting the life of the Buddha, showcasing refined Thai craftsmanship.

In terms of spiritual significance, Phra That Mahachai is often referred to as the "Pagoda of Victory." Its name, "Mahachai," symbolizes great triumph and prosperity in one's career and personal life. Pilgrims believe that paying respects here brings wisdom, leadership qualities, and the strength to overcome all obstacles. Furthermore, the temple grounds house the Luang Pu Kamphan Khosapanyo Museum, which preserves the personal belongings and a life-like wax statue of the late master. The museum serves as a center for reflection on his humble practices and teachings, emphasizing the importance of mindfulness and spiritual awakening for all visitors.
