“A large earthen dam on the main road of Mittraphap Road, with a view of a vast reservoir surrounded by mountains, suitable for stopping to rest, take photos, and watch the sunrise/sunset.”

The Lam Takhong Dam is a large-scale irrigation project established in 1964, constructed by blocking the Lam Takhong River, a vital waterway in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Its primary objectives include water storage for agriculture, consumption, and flood prevention in the Lam Takhong river basin area. The dam is an earth-fill type, standing approximately 40.30 meters high with a crest length of 521 meters, making for an impressive structure when viewed from a distance. The reservoir boasts a massive storage capacity of up to 310 million cubic meters, positioning it as a major water source and the crucial heart of the ecosystem and agricultural sector in the region.

Beyond its irrigation benefits, Lam Takhong Dam is also the site of the Lam Takhong Cholbhawatana Power Plant, which is currently the first and only pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Thailand. This power station is situated deep underground within the mountains of Khao Khuean Lan. It functions to generate electricity during periods of high demand (peak demand) by pumping water from the Lam Takhong reservoir up to an upper storage basin on the mountain peak and then releasing it to spin the turbines for power generation when necessary. The operation of this power plant showcases the nation's progress in energy technology and also houses the EGAT Learning Center Lam Takhong, which is open for tourists to visit and learn about energy and environmental issues through modern exhibitions.

The area surrounding the reservoir possesses high natural beauty, as vast stretches of water are embraced by small and large hills, resulting in a diverse and captivating landscape throughout the year. It is particularly pleasant during the cool winter season, making it ideal for relaxation. The dam crest and viewpoint areas along the reservoir are very popular public spaces. Tourists often stop their cars to stretch their legs, take photos against the backdrop of the water and mountains, and engage in recreational activities such as cycling, walking, or enjoying a scenic picnic. There are roads along the reservoir connecting to local communities and various shops, transforming Lam Takhong Dam into more than just a water storage facility but also a vital ecotourism destination and a large green space for Nakhon Ratchasima Province.
