“This contemporary-style stupa, built over the original laterite structure, is notable for its exquisite terracotta sculptures surrounding its base, beautifully depicting stories from the life of Buddha. It serves as a sacred center of faith and a significant historical landmark for the Phu Thai Kapong people in Warichaphum District.”

Phra That Si Mongkhon, also known as Wat That Si Mongkhon, stands as one of the most significant historical and religious landmarks in Waritchaphum District, Sakon Nakhon Province. It possesses a long-standing history deeply intertwined with local faith across many generations. According to local legends and historical assumptions, the original stupa was constructed using laterite stone, featuring a solid rectangular structure typical of ancient Lan Xang art. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Setthathirath of the Lao Kingdom as a symbol of the expansion of Buddhist influence throughout the Mekong Basin and the Phu Phan Mountains.

In 1974, a major restoration took place because the original structure had significantly deteriorated over time. The temple committee and the local community decided to construct a new stupa encasing the original one to preserve the sacred interior. The new design is a masterpiece of contemporary art that maintains the essence of Northeastern Thai (Isan) aesthetics. The stupa stands approximately 20 meters tall with a base width_ of 10 meters. The exterior is uniquely decorated with intricate terracotta relief work, making it stand out as a distinct architectural marvel compared to other pagodas in Sakon Nakhon.

The four sides of the stupa's base are adorned with large terracotta panels depicting the life of the Buddha, from birth and enlightenment to parinirvana. These carvings also reflect the heritage and traditional lifestyle of the Phu Thai Kapong ethnic group, the primary settlers of this area. Furthermore, the temple grounds house a small museum displaying artifacts unearthed around the site, including golden Buddha images, bronze statues, and ancient ceramics. These treasures serve as vital evidence of the flourishing Buddhist civilization in the past, making Phra That Si Mongkhon both a spiritual sanctuary and an indispensable historical educational site.
