“Climb the 585-step Naga staircase to reach Phra That Mon Phaya Chae, a sacred hilltop stupa offering panoramic views of Lampang city, surrounded by the lush nature of Mon Phaya Chae Forest Park.”
Wat Mon Phaya Chae is an ancient temple located on a hill within Mon Phaya Chae Forest Park, east of Lampang city. At the foot of the hill lies a reservoir, which helps maintain the lush and refreshing environment around the temple. The peaceful atmosphere and surrounding forest make the area ideal for both spiritual visits and nature-based relaxation.
The main highlight of the temple is Phra That Mon Phaya Chae, a sacred stupa situated on the hilltop. Visitors must climb the famous 585-step Naga staircase leading from the base of the hill to the stupa. This path represents a symbolic journey of faith and perseverance. Upon reaching the top, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Lampang city and the surrounding mountain ranges.
According to local belief, the stupa enshrines sacred relics of the Buddha, making it an important religious site for local residents. The original stupa was damaged during World War II, but it was later restored and rebuilt in 1955, resulting in the golden hilltop stupa seen today.
Beyond its religious significance, the temple area has also been developed as a recreational and tourist destination. The surrounding forest park offers natural scenery, walking paths, and quiet areas for relaxation. The nearby reservoir and forest landscape contribute to the cool and refreshing environment throughout the year.
Every year, a major religious event known as the Phra That Mon Phaya Chae Festival is held on the 8th waning day of the 7th northern lunar month (corresponding to the 9th lunar month). During this time, local residents and visitors climb the staircase to pay respect to the stupa, make merit, and participate in traditional religious activities, creating a lively and spiritual atmosphere.
How to Get There
- By Car: From Lampang city, take Highway No. 1 (Lampang–Ngao Road) for about 5 kilometers. Look for the entrance sign on the right side near Kilometer Marker 605, then continue for about 1 kilometer to reach the base of the hill and the starting point of the staircase.
