“Challenge your faith by conquering 3,790 steps to the summit to worship the Buddha's footprint and admire the grandeur of Phra Phuttha Chok, the largest Chiang Saen-style Buddha image in Lopburi.”

Khao Wong Phra Chan Temple is one of Thailand’s most famous religious and adventure tourism destinations. It is located on Khao Wong Phra Chan, the highest mountain in Lopburi Province, standing approximately 650 meters above sea level. The name of the temple comes from the mountain’s unique shape, as all four sides curve inward, forming a shape resembling a full moon. The name was given by Luang Pho Ophasri in 1953. This place is not only a sacred destination for Buddhists but also a true test of physical strength and endurance for travelers from all over the country.

The most distinctive highlight of Khao Wong Phra Chan Temple is the staircase leading to the summit, consisting of 3,790 steps with a total length of approximately 1,680 meters. Climbing to the top is considered a form of spiritual practice and a test of faith. It has even earned a reputation as a place to “prove true love” for couples who support one another all the way to the summit.

At the top of the mountain lies the Sacred Buddha Footprint (the fourth footprint), which is deeply revered by Buddhists. It is believed that those who come to pay respect here will be blessed with happiness, prosperity, and success in life. The summit also offers a 360-degree panoramic viewpoint, providing sweeping views of Khok Samrong District and the surrounding landscapes of Lopburi Province.

At the foot of the mountain stands Phra Phuttha Chok, also known as Phra Chiang Saen, a massive golden Buddha image in the Mara-victory posture with a lap width_ of 45 meters. It is the largest Buddha image in Lopburi Province and one of the largest in Thailand. Within the temple complex, the Wat Khao Wong Phra Chan Museum houses the Buddha’s relic tooth, along with many valuable historical artifacts.

Every year during the Chinese New Year festival, usually in February, the Khao Wong Phra Chan Climbing Festival is held for 15 days and 15 nights. This is the most important annual event of the temple. The staircase is beautifully illuminated, allowing visitors to climb the mountain 24 hours a day. The lively atmosphere filled with lights, colors, and faith creates a truly memorable experience.

Khao Wong Phra Chan Temple perfectly combines devotion, determination, and natural beauty. It offers a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience for those who wish to conquer the 3,790 steps, gain spiritual merit, and witness the power of faith atop the highest mountain in Lopburi Province.
