Ban Khok Mo Local Weaving Center is an important center for learning and producing handwoven textiles in Uthai Thani Province. Located in Tha Phatthan District, the village is home to the Lao Khrang ethnic group, who migrated to the area during the early Rattanakosin period as part of population resettlement from the left bank of the Mekong River. They brought with them traditional knowledge of weaving, language, and beliefs, which have been carefully passed down through generations and have become a strong cultural foundation of the community.

Textiles woven in Ban Khok Mo are not merely items of clothing but cultural symbols that once reflected the wearer’s social status, age, and role within the community. In the past, woven fabrics were used in important ceremonies such as merit-making events, weddings, and religious rituals. The patterns and colors function as a cultural language, telling stories of beliefs, traditions, and the way of life of the Lao Khrang ancestors.

The most distinctive feature of Ban Khok Mo textiles is the use of advanced weaving techniques, especially jok and khit weaving, which require a high level of skill. The patterns are intricate and complex, featuring bright colors typical of Lao Khrang identity, such as deep red, yellow, and green. Signature motifs include the Naga, symbolizing fertility and sacred power; the Hong (mythical swan), representing elegance; and botanical patterns that reflect a close relationship with nature. Each piece may take weeks or even months to complete, depending on the complexity of the design.

Another important body of knowledge preserved in the village is the use of natural dyes derived from local resources such as tree bark, leaves, and lac resin. These natural dyes produce distinctive, long-lasting colors and are safe for wearers. The dyeing process demonstrates a deep understanding of nature and responsible use of natural resources, aligning well with modern concepts of sustainable development.

The atmosphere of Ban Khok Mo Village continues to reflect a traditional rural lifestyle. The rhythmic sound of looms can be heard beneath almost every house. Visitors are welcome to observe the entire weaving process, from cotton spinning and natural dyeing to pattern creation and weaving on traditional looms. The women weavers are eager to share their knowledge and explain the meanings behind each pattern, allowing visitors to gain a deeper appreciation of Thai textile heritage.

Ban Khok Mo Traditional Weaving Village is therefore more than just a place to purchase handwoven textiles. It is a living space for preserving cultural heritage and generating income for the local community. Visitors can purchase high-quality sarongs, jok-patterned textiles, scarves, and other textile products directly from the artisans. • From Uthai Thani city, take Highway 333 to Thap Than. From the district center, follow Highway 3013 towards Khok Mo (about 5-7 km away). Signs for the weaving group are clearly posted.

Public Transport:

• Take a "Songthaew" (shuttle) to Thap Than District and hire a local motorbike taxi to the weaving center.

• Buying directly at the village offers the widest variety and the chance to see rare limited-edition pieces.
