“Three-direction Natural Gate Group in Suan Lum Basin connecting King Phra Ruang’s legend with real geography, surrounded by limestone mountains and lush forest, ideal for nature walks and as the starting point to Khao Luang Peak”
Natural Gate (Khao Luang Historical Gate Group) inside Ramkhamhaeng National Park is an important example of how natural geography was used as both boundaries and routes in the past, especially in the “Suan Lum Basin”, a fertile mountain plateau surrounded by natural forest.
From a local wisdom perspective, these natural gates were not man-made structures, but geological formations such as mountain gaps, ridges, and natural passages. They were historically used as reference points, travel routes, and strategic pathways, reflecting the deep relationship between humans and nature.
Ramkhamhaeng National Park also preserves historical evidence through three main gates:
- Pa Gate (North) located near the present park headquarters, historically used as an entry route into deep forest areas
- Plueai Gate (East) located at the park checkpoint area, functioning as a wind corridor and important passageway
- Phra Ruang Gate (South) associated with local legends stating that King Phra Ruang once entered this area to rest and fly kites
The Suan Lum Basin is a flat basin surrounded by limestone mountains, evergreen forest, and rare plant species, creating a peaceful and shaded environment ideal for walking and nature study.
Beyond its natural beauty, this area serves as a bridge between nature and culture, enriched by the legend of King Phra Ruang. It helps visitors understand historical land use and local traditions while also serving as a popular starting point for trekking up Khao Luang Peak.
