“Ancient herbal garden with rare plant species, scenic campsite at the mountain foothill, historic forest gate (Pratu Pa), and a fully equipped visitor service center for trekkers and tourists.”
Suan Lum (Suan Lum Phinivan) in Sukhothai holds both historical and geographical importance. It is believed to have been a ceremonial and recreational area for rulers during the Sukhothai period, thanks to its wide flat terrain at the foothills of Khao Luang, which allowed easy access to natural routes and essential resources. The area also shows evidence of long-standing use as a traditional herbal collection site dating back to ancient times.
Core of the National Park: Today, Suan Lum serves as the main visitor service hub of Ramkhamhaeng National Park, functioning as a registration point, information center, and coordination base for Khao Luang trekking. The surrounding area is well-organized with parking zones, waiting areas, and short nature trails that connect seamlessly to the dry evergreen forest ecosystem of Khao Luang, making it the essential starting point for all park activities.
Herbal Heritage & Local Wisdom: The site features a herbal garden with over 100 plant species, including both medicinal herbs and rare forest plants such as “Doh Mai Roo Lom” (traditional vitality herb) and “Khamlang Suea Khrong,” reflecting the rich biodiversity of Khao Luang. This area also serves as an important learning space for botany and traditional Sukhothai herbal knowledge.
Gateway to Khao Luang: The nearby “forest gate” (Pratu Pa) symbolizes the entrance to the dry evergreen forest and the challenging Khao Luang trekking route. Visitors and hikers use this area to prepare equipment, register, and rest before starting their ascent. It represents a clear transition from lowland plains to rugged mountain terrain.
Ecosystem & Atmosphere: The surrounding environment features high biodiversity, including dry evergreen forest species, shrubs, and natural ground vegetation. Small streams passing through parts of the area add moisture and balance, making it ideal for nature observation and short educational walks.
Tourism Role: Beyond being a trekking starting point, Suan Lum also functions as a relaxation and eco-learning area for general visitors. Guests can stroll through gardens, rest under shaded trees, or learn about the national park system, making it not just a transit point but a meaningful educational destination in Sukhothai.
