“The museum houses a uniquely beautiful lotus-shaped pagoda, enshrining the relics and personal belongings of Luang Pu Fan Ajaro, amidst the serene and tranquil forest temple atmosphere, steeped in the deep faith of the people of Sakon Nakhon.”

Wat Pa Udom Somphon is a prominent monastery of the Dhammayuttika Nikaya lineage, holding immense historical and spiritual significance. Established around 1940 by Luang Pu Fan Ajaro, a foremost disciple of the renowned meditation master Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatta, this forest temple served as his primary residence during his final years. It was here that he propagated the Dhamma and guided practitioners until his peaceful passing on January 4, 1977, at the age of 78. His profound impact was evidenced by the presence of King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit, who personally presided over his funeral and cremation rites at the temple grounds.

The focal point of the temple is the Achan Fan Acharo Museum, an architectural marvel built on the very site of his cremation. The stupa is uniquely designed as a triple-tiered blooming lotus, symbolizing spiritual blossoming and purity. The structure is meticulously divided into three sections: the circular base adorned with terracotta bas-reliefs depicting his life journey—from his birth and ordination to his rigorous forest pilgrimages; the central pagoda body; and the golden spire that reaches towards the sky.

Inside the sanctuary, visitors are met with a life-sized bronze statue of Luang Pu Fan in a compassionate seated posture, holding his walking stick. Adjacent to the statue is a glass display containing his sacred relics (Arthi), which have crystallized into translucent elements, alongside his monastic requisites (Atthaparikkan). These personal items, including his alms bowl, meditation umbrella (Klode), and saffron robes, serve as a testament to his austere and disciplined lifestyle. The surrounding temple area remains a lush forest haven, featuring tranquil walking paths and a large pond, preserving the authentic atmosphere of a "forest monastery" for future generations to study and practice mindfulness.

How to Get There
  • From Sakon Nakhon city, take Highway 22 (Sakon Nakhon-Udon Thani route) towards Phanna Nikhom district, approximately 37 kilometers. Upon reaching the district, turn right and continue past the Phanna Nikhom district office sign for about 2 kilometers. You will find the entrance sign to the temple on the right-hand side.

Travel Tips
  • Dress Appropriately: As this is a strict forest monastery, please wear modest clothing. Shoulders and knees should be covered; avoid sleeveless tops or short skirts/shorts.

  • Maintain Quietness: The temple is a place of meditation. Please lower your voice and keep noise to a minimum to respect the monks and other practitioners.

  • Best Time to Visit: Arriving early in the morning (08:00–10:00 AM) is recommended to enjoy the cool breeze and the beautiful morning light hitting the lotus pagoda.

  • Photography Spot: The most iconic view is from the walkway bridge over the pond, where you can capture the perfect reflection of the lotus-shaped museum on the water.

  • Entering the Museum: You must remove your shoes before entering the museum. It is customary to walk in a clockwise direction as a sign of respect.

  • Offerings: If you wish to make an offering to the monks, it is best to prepare your own supplies beforehand, as the temple is located away from major shopping areas.
