“A 155-meter-long bridge where moonlight, mountains, and river scenery create the defining image of Arashiyama in every season.”

Togetsukyo Bridge, often called the “Moon-Crossing Bridge,” has served as the visual and cultural centerpiece of Arashiyama for centuries. Originally constructed in 836, the bridge gained its poetic name during the Kamakura Period (1185–1333), when Emperor Kameyama remarked that the full moon appeared to glide across the bridge during a moon-viewing boat party.

The present structure was completed in 1934 and represents a refined balance between tradition and engineering. While the foundations are built with reinforced concrete to withstand seasonal flooding, the bridge is finished with cypress wood railings, preserving the atmosphere and appearance of its historic predecessor. Framed by the forested slopes of Mount Arashiyama, Togetsukyo Bridge is a classic example of Shakkei (borrowed scenery) and frequently appears in period films and historical imagery.

The Three Names of the River

The river flowing beneath the bridge is known by different names depending on location. Upstream to the west, it is called the Hozu River, famous for its traditional boat rides from Kameoka. Further along, it becomes the Ohi River, and only after passing beneath Togetsukyo Bridge does it officially take the name Katsura River. This transition makes the bridge a symbolic gateway between river landscapes.

Cultural Traditions

Jusan-mairi is a local coming-of-age ritual for 13-year-olds who visit Horin-ji Temple to pray for wisdom. Afterward, they must cross Togetsukyo Bridge without looking back—tradition says that turning around will cause the newly received wisdom to return to the temple.

From July to September, visitors can also witness Ukai (cormorant fishing) at night, a 1,000-year-old tradition where fishermen use fire baskets and trained birds to catch sweetfish (ayu) on the river.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Cherry blossoms line the riverbanks, creating a soft pink horizon

  • Summer: Deep green mountains and glowing Ukai fishing fires at night

  • Autumn: Peak foliage in late November, when the hills ignite in red and gold

  • Winter: Arashiyama Hanatouro (December) illuminates the bridge, bamboo grove, and surrounding paths with thousands of lanterns
