“the only wooden three-story pagoda in the Hida region, a giant ginkgo tree over 1,250 years old, the bell tower gate relocated from Takayama Castle, and its collection of ancient artifacts and Buddhist statues.”

Hida Kokubunji Temple, founded in 746 under Emperor Shōmu’s decree during the Nara period, was part of the nationwide Kokubunji (Provincial Temples) initiative to promote peace and prosperity throughout Japan. The current Hondō (main hall) dates from the Muromachi period, making it over 500 years old, and it is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

The three-story wooden pagoda, rebuilt in 1820, remains a prominent landmark and stands atop the foundation stones of the original seven-story Nara-period pagoda, which is recognized as a National Historic Site. Inside the temple, visitors can admire ancient Buddhist statues, sacred artifacts, and a large ceremonial bell.

The temple grounds also feature a giant sacred ginkgo tree, estimated to be more than 1,250 years old and believed to have been planted by the revered monk Gyōki. This tree becomes especially spectacular during autumn, when its golden leaves create a stunning display. Additionally, the bell tower gate was relocated from Takayama Castle after the castle was destroyed in 1695, highlighting the historical connection between the temple and the city’s feudal past.
