“A beautiful floating-style castle surrounded by gardens and moats, with panoramic views of the Tateyama Mountains.”
Toyama Castle was originally built in 1543, but the original structures were destroyed by earthquakes and fires. The current castle was reconstructed in 1954, carefully preserving traditional architectural style. Its surrounding moats create the impression of a “floating castle,” while parts of the moats have become the Matsu River, enhancing the serene and picturesque scenery.
Inside, the castle serves as the Toyama City Historical Museum, showcasing the Maeda family history, samurai armor, and various historical artifacts. The surrounding area features Toyama Castle Ruin Park, a clean and spacious park perfect for strolling and relaxing. Visitors can also enjoy the Sato Memorial Art Museum and a traditional Japanese tea house, providing a peaceful and classic atmosphere.
In spring (early April), cherry blossoms bloom around the moats, creating spectacular reflections of the castle on the water—a favorite spot for photography. From the upper floors of the castle, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Toyama City and the majestic Tateyama Mountains in the background.
