“ Admire the white riverside pagoda along the Chao Phraya River, an Ayutthaya-period Buddha image, the Moolmanee Mansion, and the historic Red Pavilion with its ancient architectural style. ”

Wat Khemaphirataram Ratchaworawihan is a second-class royal temple (Ratchaworawihan) located along the Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi Province. Historical evidence suggests that this area has been a riverside monastic community since the early Ayutthaya period. Originally known as “Wat Khema,” it once served as an important local temple and spiritual center for the riverside community.During the Rattanakosin era, the temple underwent significant restoration, particularly under the reigns of King Rama II and King Rama IV. With royal patronage, it was elevated to royal temple status, becoming an important center for religion and education in Nonthaburi. These restorations resulted in a distinctive blend of Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin architectural styles.

The most prominent feature is the large white pagoda (chedi), a tall bell-shaped structure located by the river, enshrining sacred Buddha relics and serving as a major place of worship and devotion.Inside the ordination hall (ubosot) is an ancient Buddha image in Ayutthaya style, characterized by serene facial expressions, traditional proportions, and preserved classical stucco decorations.Another significant structure is the Moolmanee Mansion (Phra Thi Nang Mool Manee), a wooden royal building believed to have been relocated from the Grand Palace during the reign of King Rama IV. It reflects high-level royal craftsmanship and rare traditional Thai wooden architecture.

In addition, the Red Pavilion (Tamnak Daeng) is an old wooden residence showcasing traditional Thai noble architecture, featuring intricate wood carvings that remain remarkably well preserved, making it a rare surviving example of historical craftsmanship.Located along the Chao Phraya River, the temple enjoys a cool breeze and peaceful atmosphere throughout the day. It is ideal for meditation, historical learning, and appreciating Thai art and architecture.Overall, Wat Khemaphirataram is not just a place of worship but a “living museum” reflecting the continuous evolution of Thai art and architecture from the Ayutthaya period to the Rattanakosin era, preserving its cultural identity remarkably well to this day.
