“An unseen tourist attraction in Khao Yai, where natural springs gush out year-round, creating a crystal-clear pond with a blue-green color resembling an emerald, perfect for cooling off in the water.”

The Baan Tha Chang Spring is a unique geological phenomenon in the Khao Yai area of Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Locals call it "fountain" or "rotten pond," referring to the water that constantly bubbles up from beneath the ground. This site was discovered and developed into a natural tourist attraction through the cooperation of local community enterprises.

Geological Origin

This spring is a classic example of groundwater discharge, originating from rainwater falling on the limestone mountains within Khao Yai National Park. This rainwater seeps through the soil and limestone layers below the earth's surface, collecting in aquifers and undergoing a natural filtration process over many years.

When the groundwater reaches its peak and encounters a crack in the subsurface rock (in this case, a limestone fissure), it is forced by natural pressure to emerge to the surface, forming a continuous, year-round spring. The water is exceptionally clear and pure due to the removal of minerals and sediments. Furthermore, the water's high pH and high content of important minerals, such as calcium carbonate, contribute to its high alkalinity. When light hits it, it creates a beautiful refraction phenomenon, giving the water a beautiful blue-green or emerald-blue hue, resembling the Emerald Pool.

Development into a Community Tourism Destination

In the past, Nam Phut was simply a natural spring used by villagers for consumption and agriculture. Later, it became well-known among travelers and nature enthusiasts, leading to the establishment of a local community enterprise to manage and develop the area into a sustainable tourist destination. Community management has helped preserve the natural environment and maintain the clear, clean water quality.

The community has provided a variety of activity areas, such as encircling the main spring and a large pool for safe swimming and kayaking. Walking paths and wooden bridges have been constructed to provide convenient access to viewpoints. Basic amenities, such as restaurants, shops, and parking, are also provided. Most of the revenue from these services is reinvested into the Nam Phut area and community development.

Fountain is not only a remarkable tourist destination for its natural beauty but also an example of successful community-based tourism management, balancing the conservation of unique natural resources with generating income for locals. Fountain offers visitors a place where they can experience the pristine and tranquil beauty of nature, not far from the main attractions of Khao Yai.
