JR Uji Station is the primary station of Uji City, a place historically revered as the birthplace of Japan’s highest-grade matcha. Since the Kamakura period, Uji tea has been presented to the imperial court, establishing the city’s enduring reputation as Japan’s green tea capital. Located on the JR Nara Line, the station offers direct and convenient access between Kyoto and Nara, making it especially popular among Japan Rail Pass holders.

The station building features a distinctive circular design by architect Hiroyuki Wakabayashi. Its form symbolizes harmony and continuity, reflecting both the flow of the Uji River and the centuries-old tea culture that defines the city. The architecture itself has become a modern landmark within Kyoto Prefecture.

The South Exit is the main orientation point for visitors. Just outside, travelers will find the famous teapot-shaped mailbox, a beloved photo spot symbolizing Uji’s tea identity. Letters mailed from this mailbox can receive a special Uji-themed pictorial postmark (風景印 – fūkeiin) when processed through the local post office, making it a unique souvenir for stationery and postcard enthusiasts. Nearby, the tourist information center provides maps, sightseeing advice, and multilingual support.

Since late 2024, JR Uji Station has become noticeably busier due to the opening of the Nintendo Museum. Although the closest station to the museum is JR Ogura Station (just one stop away), many visitors choose JR Uji as their base for the day, combining cultural sightseeing with museum visits. To accommodate travelers, the station is equipped with a large number of coin lockers, ideal for those stopping in Uji between Kyoto and Nara or traveling with luggage.
