Street Art Betong is a contemporary art project initiated to celebrate the 111th anniversary of Betong District. Its core concept, “Storytelling Through Walls,” aims to convey the community’s identity in an accessible way while connecting younger generations with traditional cultural roots.
Most artworks are painted on old commercial buildings and wooden houses in the historic town area, adding depth and character. The aged textures of the walls enhance the murals, making them feel vibrant and well integrated with their surroundings. Both Thai and international artists contributed, each interpreting “Betong” through unique perspectives, resulting in diverse styles such as realistic, illustrative, and contemporary graffiti.
The murals primarily depict local lifestyles in detail, including traditional occupations like trishaw drivers, culinary culture such as making local dishes, lively morning market scenes reflecting the local economy, and images of children and families symbolizing warmth and simplicity.
In terms of urban layout, the street art is not concentrated in one place but spread across key areas such as the clock tower, Pakdee Damrong Road, and near Betong Mongkollit Tunnel. This encourages a “city walk” experience, allowing visitors to explore gradually, absorb the atmosphere, and discover hidden artworks in small alleys—one of Betong’s unique charms.
Another highlight is the interaction between art and real surroundings. Some murals are designed to blend with actual elements like doors, windows, or streets, allowing for creative, interactive photography where visitors can become part of the scene.
From a tourism perspective, Street Art Betong plays a significant role in revitalizing the old town, boosting the local economy, and encouraging the growth of cafés, souvenir shops, and boutique accommodations. Visitors tend to spend more time in the area, benefiting the community as a whole.
