“City hall of entertainment e.g. music, dance, movies, art, comedy and education”
The Theatre Royal, situated on the Mall in Waterford is Ireland's oldest continually operating theatre. Lovingly restored, this Victorian gem hidden within a beautiful Georgian building which was designed by famous Waterford architect John Roberts first opened in 1785 and the first performance was Shakespeare's popular five-act comedy As You Like It.
The building was upgraded to the auditorium that we see today in 1876 and has since housed the likes of Oscar Wilde, Harold Pinter and King Edward VII amongst others. These days the theatre runs a full year diverse programme of events including local musical theatre, international acts, even cookery demonstrations and audio visual talks. It is also used as a wedding venue and the location for music videos. Come and take our interactive historical tour and see how Ireland's oldest operating theatre works, or take in a show.
