“A golden twelve-cornered Lanna chedi built over an ancient site linked to Queen Chamadevi’s legend, featuring a serene atmosphere and a 360-degree panoramic view of Li town and surrounding mountains.”

Wat Phra That Duang Diao is an important historical and spiritual landmark of Li District. Located on a hill that once served as the center of an ancient settlement, the temple is deeply connected to legends of Queen Chamadevi, the founding history of Li town, and centuries of local faith. Today, it is also known as one of the most peaceful scenic viewpoints in the area.

The Crystal Orb Legend and the Founding of Li

Local legend tells that when Queen Chamadevi came to survey this region to establish a satellite city of the Hariphunchai Kingdom, she witnessed a single radiant crystal orb floating upward into the sky. Unlike nearby sites where five orbs appeared, this place revealed only one. Interpreting it as a sacred sign, she ordered a stupa to be built to enshrine the holy presence.

The Sacred Elephant Legend and “Central Stupa of the City”

Another legend states that while fleeing conflict from Luang Prabang, Queen Chamadevi traveled with a royal elephant. The elephant performed five auspicious gestures before collapsing and dying at this location. The queen then ordered its remains to be cremated and a stupa constructed over the site, later establishing the city of Li here. Because of this, the temple is also known as “Phra That Klang Wiang” (the central stupa of the ancient city).

Present Architecture of the Chedi

The current chedi is relatively modern, estimated to be less than 80 years old, as it was rebuilt to cover the original structure. The present stupa is a tall, slender, twelve-cornered square form rising about 30 meters high, enclosed within a surrounding gallery. The reconstruction completely covered the earlier chedi, leaving no visible remains of the original.

Ancient City Site and Historical Traces

The temple stands on the site of the former ancient city of Li. Today, visitors can still see remnants of the old city moat embankments, particularly along sections near Phahonyothin Road, reflecting the historical importance of this area.

Scenic Viewpoint and Peaceful Atmosphere

Because of its hilltop location, the temple offers wide panoramic views of mountains and Li town below. Its quiet surroundings make it ideal for worship, meditation, and enjoying nature in a tranquil setting.
