“A beautifully restored Lanna-style ancient gate featuring long red-brick city walls along the moat and closely connected to the legendary arrival of Queen Chamadevi.”
Tha Nang Gate is one of the five original gates of ancient Hariphunchai City, located on the southern side, which was traditionally considered an auspicious direction for welcoming royal arrivals. It remains one of Lamphun’s most historically significant landmarks.
The name “Tha Nang” comes from “Tha” meaning pier and “Nang” referring to Queen Chamadevi. According to legend, when the queen traveled by royal flotilla from Lavo (modern Lopburi), she docked her boat along the Kuang River at this very spot before entering the city for her coronation. This moment marked the beginning of the Chamadevi dynasty and the flourishing of Hariphunchai.
Historically, the area around the gate was also a major commercial zone, serving as a connection point between river transport and the inner city. This made the gate important both economically and strategically for city defense.
Today, the gate has been reconstructed on its original site while preserving traditional Lanna architectural style. Its distinctive red-brick arch, ancient city walls, and landscaped moat surroundings create a peaceful atmosphere, making it both a cultural landmark and a popular relaxation spot for locals.
