“A short, easy, and gentle hiking trail in Khao Yai National Park, suitable for all ages, the destination is the Nong Phak Chi Wildlife Observation Tower, a vast grassland and important water source for wildlife.”

Nature Trail, km 33, Nong Phak Chi is one of the most popular hiking trails and has a significant history in wildlife resource management within Khao Yai National Park. It begins at kilometer marker 33 on Thanarat Road, the main road through the park and connecting the dry evergreen forest with the savannah grasslands.

History and Context of the Area

Nong Phak Chi was once an area affected by encroachment and deforestation. However, thanks to the park officials' efforts in restoring the area, it has transformed into a rich natural water source and grassland, providing an important "oasis" for many large wildlife species, particularly sambar deer and barking deer, which often come down to drink and forage during the early morning and dusk. The Nong Phak Chi Observation Tower was constructed to monitor, care for, and research wildlife behavior. It also provides visitors with a safe and comfortable way to observe wildlife in their natural habitat.

Trail Characteristics and Ecosystem

The entire hiking trail is approximately 3,000 meters (3 kilometers) long, forming a gentle and relatively easy loop. This makes the average walk only 2-3 hours, making it ideal for families and inexperienced hikers. The highlight of this hike is the opportunity to experience the diversity of two main ecosystems:

  • Dry Evergreen Forest: The trail begins through relatively dense dry evergreen forest, shaded by tall vegetation and trees, such as the large banyan tree with its dangling aerial roots, as well as moisture-loving plants with complex forest structures. Interpretive signs along the trail provide information about the plant species and their relationships within the forest.

  • Savannah (Nong Phak Chi Area): After exiting the forest, you'll encounter Nong Phak Chi, a large open area of grassland interspersed with small bodies of water, reminiscent of the African savanna. This area has been managed to control weed growth and maintain a food source for ungulates. This area offers the highest chance of wildlife sightings. Visitors can climb to the two-story wooden observation tower for a peaceful and private viewing experience.

This walk is not only a gentle exercise but also a living classroom of nature, showcasing the delicate relationship between the dry evergreen forest and the open grasslands within the Khao Yai ecosystem, a significant World Heritage Site in Thailand.
