“A vast freshwater wetland of global importance featuring stunning Phu Langka views, romantic sunsets, panoramic observation towers, and diverse birdlife in a perfect relaxing atmosphere.”

Bueng Khong Long (Bueng Kan) is a massive freshwater lake covering an area of over 8,000 rai (approximately 13 square kilometers). Originally a smaller natural wetland, its current expanse is the result of a royal initiative in 1977 by King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, who directed the construction of a reservoir project to provide water for agriculture during the dry season. Today, it stands as a flourishing ecosystem and a vital lifeline for local communities, supporting both farming and traditional inland fisheries.

The international significance of Bueng Khong Long is marked by its designation as a "Ramsar Site" (No. 1,098 globally and the 2nd in Thailand). It is recognized for its immense biodiversity, serving as a sanctuary for over 100 species of waterfowl and migratory birds, particularly during the winter months when birds flee the Siberian cold to find refuge here. The lake is also home to various rare aquatic plants and indigenous flora, making it a crucial center for environmental education and a premier destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

In terms of tourism and recreation, Bueng Khong Long has been thoughtfully developed with nature trails and high observation towers. These facilities allow visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the vast lake set against the majestic backdrop of the Phu Langka mountain range. The atmosphere is serene, filled with fresh air and natural tranquility. Additionally, the lakeside features "Hat Kham Somboon," a freshwater beach that acts as an inland seaside for locals. This area is a popular hub for swimming, picnicking, and enjoying local cuisine, especially during the golden hour when the sunset reflects off the water, creating one of the most romantic and memorable sights in Northeastern Thailand.
