“A breathtaking volcanic gorge famous for its vertical basalt cliffs, rowboat experience, and the legendary Manai Falls—enriched by powerful Shinto mythology.”

Takachiho Gorge (Takachiho-kyō) is a stunning volcanic ravine located deep within the mountains of Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu. Formed more than 100,000 years ago by massive lava flows from nearby Mount Aso, its dramatic landscape emerged as the Gokase River gradually carved into the hardened rock. This erosion created perfectly vertical basalt cliffs that rise sharply above a narrow strip of emerald-green river, producing one of Japan’s most visually striking natural scenes.

At the heart of the gorge lies Manai Falls, a graceful 17-meter cascade designated both as a National Scenic Natural Monument and as one of Japan’s 100 Most Beautiful Waterfalls. Its flowing veil of water, framed by dark basalt columns and lush greenery, creates one of the most iconic and photographed views in the region.

One of the most unforgettable experiences at Takachiho Gorge is renting a traditional rowboat. This allows visitors to glide peacefully along the river, gaze upward at the breathtaking towering cliffs, and approach the waterfall from a rare, close-up perspective—an experience unmatched anywhere else in Japan. For visitors preferring an elevated vantage point, the Takachiho Promenade offers a one-kilometer walking path along the upper rim of the gorge, providing a series of scenic overlooks and panoramic viewpoints.

Culturally, the Takachiho area is deeply intertwined with ancient Japanese mythology. Considered one of Japan’s most significant “power spots,” it is famously associated with the legend of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, who secluded herself in a cave and plunged the world into darkness. Nearby, Takachiho Shrine—known for its nightly Yokagura dances—and the sacred site of Amano Yasukawara, where the gods gathered to lure Amaterasu out, bring the mythology to life and transform the region into a deeply spiritual destination.
